API Growth

Innovations Academy is in the top schools in the county for API growth for the 2009/10 school year. See the article in Sign On San Diego (see the chart). While we have our qualms about state testing, we know that assessment is an important measure and wanted to share our improvement.

What is your response when people say that IA still has a relatively low API score?

The long and short of it is that it is quite common for charter schools, in their first few years (especially with a grade span of students like ours), to experience low API scores. This stems from the fact that the majority of our students have been largely educated elsewhere. The question becomes, which school is the test reflecting? The school they've come to for 1 or 2 years or the previous school they may have spent quite a few at.

When we're looking at our kids, we have to keep in consideration that only our current 2nd graders have been with us for the entire time. In addition, if we had a great score next year it is likely to be written off as a "good batch" of kids. We're very happy that our work with the children is starting to be reflected in our API growth and we look forward to seeing how this progresses in the future.
